The Goa State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has issued an advisory warning residents about the rising temperatures and potential heatwave conditions in the state. The advisory comes into effect amid forecasts of extreme heat expected to last until April 8th.
To mitigate the risks and safeguard public well-being, the SDMA has circulated the Goa Heatwave Action Plan 2024 with all relevant departments. This plan outlines preventative measures and mitigation strategies. The plan can be found on the official websites of the Goa SDMA (https://www.sdma.goa.gov.in/) and the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) of North Goa and South Goa.
The SDMA has also appointed nodal officers from various departments to improve communication and collaboration between disaster management authorities at the state and district levels.
The advisory urges Goans to rely on official sources for information on heatwave preparedness and prevention tips. Goa experiences rising temperatures from March to May, causing discomfort for residents and tourists alike.
To avoid serious health complications like heatstroke and related illnesses, the SDMA recommends using the SACHET application launched by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of India. This app provides location-specific weather forecasts, heatwave dos and don’ts, and an emergency button to dial 112 for assistance. The app can be downloaded from the Play Store (Android) and App Store (iOS).
The SDMA also recommends other government recommended apps: Mausam (weather forecast), Meghdoot (agricultural forecast), and Damini (lightning alert).
The Goa SDMA and Health Department have already issued heatwave alerts through the Integrated Common Alert Protocol (CAP) platform.
